Video: Robert Del Naja – Battle Box 001

Shadowy Massive Attack founding member Robert Del Naja has launched his own deeply moody eponymous solo project and releases his debut 12″ ‘Battle Box 001′ on The Vinyl Factory today. The track rumbles along an unsettling dub-heavy groove while plaintive vocals from Elbow’s Guy Garvey lure you into a sense of false sense of ease. It’s an intoxicating listen, and equally alluring video, thanks to punishingly beautiful art direction by Dusan and Hilde Reljen. In the ‘Rorschach’-esque abstract sequences, Hitchcockian birds, ruptured nature scenes, and roses exploding into a million little pieces underline the song’s menacing feel. The Reljens told Nowness, who premiered ‘Battle Box’ today, that they experimented with volatile chemicals to achieve this effect:
‘We…[dipped] each one into liquid nitrogen we blew them up with dynamite and makeup powder. Some of them exploded really nicely and some of them were a complete disaster’. To us, that lingering instability only adds to the thrill of it all. Watch the enticing clip above.
