Beginning at 8am GMT, the first total solar eclipse since 1999 took to the sky in the UK, the Arctic and throughout northwestern Europe. During a solar eclipse, the moon passes directly in from of the sun, resulting in total daytime darkness for only a few moments until the sun reemerges. Millions of people gathered to watch this celestial phenomenon, capturing fascinating and eerie images of the changing light. Here are some of the highlights.
