Reason to Celebrate: Pi Day

Instagram is wonderful for looking at photos of skylines, shoes and sexy girls, but recently math and food also rank highly in that list. Fittingly, today is a special day for the latter categories. Every March 14th, mathematicians and pie lovers around the world come together to celebrate Pi Day. Pi, or “π,” is the symbol used to represent the number you get when you divide the circumference of a circle –like a circle of pie — by its diameter. Why March 14? While Pi can be calculated to over one trillion digits, its first three—3.14—call to mind today’s date. The Instagram team celebrated Pi Day with some mini strawberry-blackberry crumble pies. Yum! But don’t forget to eat your pie and consciously cut it into mathematically sound fractions. (Yeah, right). Did you celebrate Pi Day? Send your comments and photos over to @instagram and add #piday.
